Orlando International Airport

Orlando International Airport, the busiest airport in the state of Florida, is the most important airport in the city of Orlando situated 10 km to the southeast of the chief business district of Orlando. This airport is Florida’s busiest airport due to its reputation as a prime tourist destination as well as a well-developing city in Florida. Being a minor hub for the Delta Connection carriers including Chautauqua Airlines and the Freedom Airlines and a prime hub for Southwest Airlines, Delta Airlines, AirTran Airways and JetBlue Airways, Orlando International Airport is also home to the official headquarters of AirTran Airways. Eastern Airlines, which earlier served Orlando International Airport, was the former official airline of Walt Disney World. This responsibility was taken over by the Delta Air Lines.

In the year 2006, Orlando International Airport served about 34.8 million passengers and owned the fame of being the 13th busiest international airport in the whole of the United States as well as the twenty-third busiest international airport in the world. Orlando International Airport is also popular for being the 15th busiest intercontinental gateway city which is ranked after Philadelphia International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport. Though the airport code MCO of Orlando International Airport stands for McCoy Air Force Base, its former name, local people often humorously label it as “Mickey’s Corporate Office” due to its popularity for being home to world-famous Walt Disney World Resort. The site, on which Orlando International Airport is based at present, was the former airbase of the United States Air Force which was known as McCoy Air Force Base. In 1974 the airport was handed over to the city of Orlando and the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority was established in the year of 1975. Greater Orlando Aviation Authority was totally aimed at organizing and constructing Orlando International Airport as well as the Orlando Executive Airport. In 1976 Orlando International Airport owned its present name and status of an international airport. The construction of Airside 1 and the North Terminal in this airport was started in the year 1978, the inauguration of these being in 1981. Airside 3 was inaugurated in 1984 and Airside 4 was operational from the tear of 1990. The construction of Airside 3 was finished in 2000 with a number of gates last added to it in 2006. Orlando International Airport, the designated emergency landing site for Space Shuttles serves millions of passengers every year.

Orlando International Airport comprises of a single major terminal building which is connected by the people mover to the four airside terminals. It offers passenger check-in as well as baggage claim facilities. Baggage claim “A” is used by Airsides 1 and 2 and baggage claim “B” is used by Airsides 3 and 4.Customs clearance and immigration procedures of the international passengers arriving at Orlando International Airport are carried through the airside terminals at which they arrive. First they clear US immigration and after collecting their baggage clear the US customs. After riding the people mover to the chief terminal, they reclaim their baggage.
